BMW has big plans for 2011 but no news about a future M5

The German automaker BMW has quite a bit in store for the upcoming model year, from the Z4 hard top roadster to the 335is that squeezes into the range right below the factory tuned track day special M3, there is even an all new set of twin scroll turbochargers bolted to the 3.0 Liter straight six that will spool up faster offering even more power off the line as well as improved efficiency. However one member of the Bavarian lineup that the luxury automaker is keeping a bit tight lipped about is the upcoming M5.
With the current trend favoring fuel economy over sheer horse power, automakers around the world are downsizing their engine lineups in order to meet stringent efficiency regulations and that means that the current 500 HP V10 found under the hood of the high performance four door is more than likely to go the way of the dinosaurs. BMW states that “a new M5 Sedan based on the upcoming 6th generation 5 Series is planned but not ready to be unveiled yet,” this means that BMW either has something big in the works or they don’t want to rain on the all new 5 Series GT’s parade.

Dinan’s S3 stroker kit gives the BMW M5 and M6 628 race proven horsepower

Dinan's S3 stroker kit gives the BMW M5 and M6 628 race proven horsepower

The American tuner Dinan has become known as the premier BMW tuning shop here in the U.S. They have built a reputation for high horsepower reliability with a lineup of supercharger applications for a host of BMWs, however over the past few years, Dinan has been having a go at building high output race engines for Daytona Prototype race cars that compete in the Rolex Grand Am series of endurance events. Their latest work of art in motion is the Dinan S3 kit for both the BMW M5 and M6 that includes both exterior and engine upgrades.
Using what they have leaned on the race track, Dinan increased the high revving power plant’s displacement from an even 5.0 Liters all the way up to 5.7 Liters. With the help of a reprogrammed ECU Dinan is able to extract an amazing 628 HP and 480 lb-ft of torque from the reworked V10. The result is a full size premium sorts car that will rip from 0 to 60 MPH in only 3.8 seconds. Dinan is also offering a free flowing exhaust to handle the added spent gasses, a shorter 3.91:1 limited slip differential for enhanced acceleration and even power distribution across the rear axle as well as Stage 3 suspension setup to keep the plus sized Bimmer planted and a Dinan/Brembo big brake conversion behind a set of 19 inch lightweight Dinan alloys to ensure that the M will both stop and look as good as it goes.

Next generation BMW M5 to make 570 HP

Next generation BMW M5 to make 570 HP

After seeing the next generation of BMW’s 5-Series sedan, the next logical inquiry delves into the realm of high performance four doors and more specifically about the future holds for the next M5. Set to be unveiled in 2011, BMW’s new flagship performance sedan will be powered by the same twin turbocharged V8 that can be found under the hood of the X6 M and will be mated to a seven speed dual clutch transmission. But because it is one of the German automaker’s halo cars, the engine will be tweaked to deliver a total of 570 HP and over 500 lb-ft of torque.
Just like last year’s Formula One car, the next generation M5 is set to make use of a revolutionary Kinetic Energy Regeneration System, the performance oriented gas/electric hybrid unit combines an electric motor in the BMW’s transmission and a brake energy recovery device that charges a battery pack mounted inside the M5 that allows for extra bursts of energy over short periods of time, just like Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. Reports suggest that BMW is considering rebuilding the entire 5-Series platform out of lightweight aluminum and use the space age composite carbon fiber for a few body panels as well as an optional roof insert that will not only enhance the future M5’s agility but will also make up for the additional weight of the KERS unit. No matter what happens, BMW’s engineers have been doling out desirable M5s for many years now, so no matter what they decide to do this time, we are sure that they won’t disappoint.

2011 BMW M5 rendered

2011 BMW M5 rendered

Just last month BMW released images of the 2011 5-Series midsize luxury sedan, so only one new moon later renderings of the next generation BMW M5 have started to make their way onto the internet, well before its scheduled reveal in 2010.
Due to a variety of reasons ranging from the credit crunch to stringent CAFE standards, BMW will drop the exotic high revving V10 from their flagship 5 Series as part of their downsizing efforts and replace it with a tuned version of the compact 4.4 Liter twin turbocharged V8 that is already found under the hood of the X6M and X5M sport activity vehicles. Despite the lack of displacement, making power should not be an issue, with the boosted BMW eight cylinder slated to produce somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 HP. No matter what the future M5 looks like or what it has under the hood, just like all M5s that came before, the next generation model is guaranteed to be a high performance icon for years to come.

Video: BMW releases commemorative video of the M5

It’s hard to imagine that it’s been 25 years since the first-ever release of the BMW M5, yet that’s exactly how long it’s been. In celebrating the silver anniversary of BMW Motorsport’s first M5 release, the company took a group of journalists and brought them to the Nurburgrin Nodrschleife for an in-depth look at the long and rich history of the M5, as well as glimpses of what, hopefully, is a sign of things to come.
Among those that BMW featured in their celebration were two fabled M5 cars that came close to being released out on the market, but ended up being shelved for one reason or another: the BMW M5 E34 Cabriolet and the BMW M5 E39 Touring.
In addition to that, the attending journalists were also given a sneak-peek at a one-of-a-kind M5, the E60. As an tweaked up M5, the M5 E60 comes with a boatload of upgrades from its standard-bearer, including a larger engine capacity, as well as a larger horsepower output.
To chronicle the celebration, BMW released a video of the history of the M5, and while the language of the said video leaves a lot to be desired, the footage that you see would be enough for you to understand the illustrious history of the M5.

Video: Lap the Nurburgring in a BMW M5 ’Ring Taxi

Any car enthusiast will tell you that if there’s one race circuit in the world that they’d like to burn rubber on, it’s the Nurburgring Nordschleife race track in Germany. While our chances of ever stepping into the graffiti-laden pavement of Nurburgring may have been little to none in the past, we may finally get our chance soon enough.
BMW will soon release a BMW M5 taxi exclusively for the Nurburgring. OK, so you won’t be behind the wheel of the car, but still, taking a lap of the ‘Ring in the passenger seat of an M5 is still better than anything you could have ever hoped for.
You must be warned, though. BMW Motorsports have said that tickets for the M5 Ring-Taxi are as scarce as snow in the Philippines and that availability – if there’s any – will be announced by BMW around Christmas-time. Nevertheless, it’s still worth keeping tabs on. After all, you don’t get many opportunities like this in your lifetime, and if you can do it, we guarantee you’ll become the envy of all your car-loving friends, for as long as you don’t tell them that you were just in the passenger seat of the M5.

Future BMW M5 will be powered by boosted V8

1.
The folks over at Inside Line have done the legwork and confirmed that the future BMW M5 will indeed be powered by a smaller turbocharged V8 as opposed to the super sedan’s current high revving V10 in an attempt to bring the luxury automaker’s fuel economy figures more in line with the new industry standard. Although the thought of a Formula One inspired 9,000 RPM ten cylinder engine screaming in a mid size sports sedan is too much to tempting to pass up, a smaller engine makes more sense for the future. In fact, BMW already offers quite a few cars with turbocharged V8 engines, this way the technology can trickle down more easily into the rest of the German automaker’s lineup.
The X5M and X6M are already powered by a 4.4 Liter twin turbo eight cylinder engine that already makes a maximum output of 555 HP and 5000 lb-ft of torque. Perhaps an M badged model would receive a bit of an increase in bore and a stroke to see the engine displacing closer to 5.0 Liters thanks to a set of lightweight forged pistons. It would have to be built to handle the additional pressure from an upgraded set of turbochargers to make somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 HP. With a highly versatile modern day direct gasoline injection system, the high performance power plant can be tuned to run efficiently when not creating as much power as possible.
The other benefit of a super tuned future M5 is that every other owner of a turbocharged V8 Bimmer stands to profit from a host of possible second hand performance parts range from turbochargers and intercoolers to waste gates and engine programs that will make hot rodding a BMW with factory parts fashionable once again. Unfortunately for fans of smaller high performance German automobiles, the sleuths at Inside Line also uncovered that just like Audi, BMW isn’t planning on pushing a motor sport inspired 1 Series compact in the U.S. anytime soon.

BMW could create a twin turbo V8 powered M5

BMW could create a twin turbo V8 powered M5

It appears that the German luxury automaker, BMW is struggling with whether or not to replace the engine in their high performance halo car for 2011. The next generation BMW M5 will either powered by a more efficient version of the current car’s V10 engine or if speculators have their way, the next 5 Series super sedan could be motivated by a healthy helping of boost. That is because BMW is already running a high performance twin turbocharged V8 in both the X5M and X6M sport activity vehicles, and with a little bit of innovative German engineering the BMW boffins could have the mill screaming to the tune of over 600 HP.
Reports have shown that BMW are cautious about continuing to use the V10 because of the CO2 emissions regulations in the U.S. a problem that can be avoided by going with a pair of less pistons. However if the M5 is to maintain its status as one of the brand’s premier vehicles then it would help to have something special under the hood, something not found in any other Bimmer, something to make it even more desirable.
So the question that the BMW engineers have to ask themselves right now is, what would be the better plan for the future? An all out high performance naturally aspirated V10 might sound like a fantastic idea for a sports car power plant, but with the current trend of environmentalism and efficiency, the idea of downsizing and turbo charging is becoming a widely accepted practice in the automobile industry. So what is BMW going to do? Stay tuned to find out.

2012 BMW M5 rendering

2012 BMW M5 rendering

Things happen fast in the world of super cars; a hot item today is tomorrow’s old news. That is why the German luxury car maker, BMW is already preparing their next generation factory tuned super saloon, the M5. The next generation sports sedan will feature a more muscular design, consisting of a wider body and some extremely aggressive new lines.
In these fossil fuel conserving times BMW will drop the high revving V10 in favor of a twin-turbo V8, similar to the setup found under the hood of the X5 M and X6 M, but don’t expect it to make anything less than the 500 HP of the current M5. For 2012 the boosted M5 should make over 550 HP, that is if they want to stay competitive with their German rival, the 572 HP Audi RS6.
